Hewlett Packard Enterprise MSA – Modular Storage Array

What is it?

Entry level Fibre Channel / iSCSI / SAS Storage Array is entry level storage. These are fast storage up to 85,000 IOPs using SSD and offer controller redundancy, port redundancy, snapshots and remote replication capability.
The MSA 1020 is a lower spec than the 2040 and doesn’t accept SSD drives. It supports FC or iSCSI host connectivity and has a maximum capacity of 288TB using a maximum of 3 addition disk enclosures.
The HPE MSA 2040 supports SSD drives and offers FC, iSCSI & SAS host connectivity options. The FC array can have a mixture of FC & iSCSI, it has a maximum capacity of 576TB using a maximum of 7 additional disk enclosures. Both models come with a licence to take 64 snapshots and you can buy licenses to increase the number of snapshots up to 512 and to be able to do remote snapshots (asynchronous replication).

Who buys this?

Small to Medium Businesses or customers having the need for a dedicated array is for an IO hungry application.

Plus Points

Speed. Large customers to buy the MSA over large enterprise arrays based on machines are fast. Data in place upgrades: you can upgrade from P2000 G3 to the new MSA models just by swapping the controllers, you can also upgrade from MSA1020 to MSA2040.

Negative Points

The GUI is a bit chunky but adequate for the purpose of provisioning LUNs, snapshots, etc. Performance monitoring is as basic as it gets, run a command to collect performance metrics to a CSV file.

Current Models:

Both 1020 and 2040 are available in SFF or LFF variants
-1020 Fibre Channel host connectivity has 2xFC ports per controller
-1020 iSCSI host connectivity has 2xiSCSI ports per controller
-2040 Fibre Channel host connectivity has up to 4x16Gb FC or 2xFC + 2xiSCSI
-2040 iSCSI host connectivity has up to 4x1GbE or 10GbE connections
-2040 SAS host connectivity has up to 4x12Gb SAS connections
 FC vs iSCSI vs SAS:
16Gb FC, 10GbE, 12Gb SAS – all fast protocols. Best between :FC or SAS
Traditionally MSA can have SSD disks, take snapshots and replicate to a remote array. As mentioned above, these arrays are fast, if you create large enough RAID sets then get very good IOPs from these boxes.
