How to add an expansion enclosure to an existing IBMSystem storage V5030 storage?

An IBM SystemStorage V5030 system scales up to 504 drives with the attachment of up to 20 IBM System Storage V5030 expansion enclosures. It also offers flexible drive configurations with the choice of 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch form factors, 10 K or 15 K rpm SAS and 7.2 K rpm NL-SAS hard disk drives (HDDs), and SAS flash drives (solid-state drives [SSDs]).

Customers can intermix 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch expansion enclosures behind a 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch control enclosure. This configuration delivers the added flexibility to mix 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives within a single system but not within the enclosure.

The optional IBM System  storage V5030 expansion enclosure contains two expansion canisters, disk drives, and two power supplies. Two types of expansion enclosures are available: large form factor (LFF) Expansion Enclosure Model 12F and small form factor (SFF) Expansion Enclosure Model 24F.

The expansion enclosure power supplies are the same as the control enclosure power supplies. A single power lead connector is on each power supply unit. Each expansion canister provides two SAS interfaces that are used to connect to the control enclosure and any further optional expansion enclosures. The ports are numbered 1 on the left and 2 on the right. SAS port 1 is the IN port, and SAS port 2 is the OUT port. The use of SAS connector 1 is mandatory because the expansion enclosure must be attached to a control enclosure or another expansion enclosure further up in the chain. SAS connector 2 is optional because it is used to attach to further expansion enclosures down the chain.

When adding an expansion enclosure to an existing system, use the Storwize management GUI to update the system configuration.

The management GUI requires a supported web browser.

Procedure to add an expansion enclosure to the system,
        1. Install support rails for the new enclosure.
       2. Install the new enclosure in the rack.
       3. Connect the expansion enclosure attachment cables.
       4. Connect the power cables and wait for the SAS LEDs to illuminate.
       5. Start the management GUI.
       6. Select Monitoring > System Details.
       7. Select the system name in the tree.
       8. Select Actions > Add Enclosures > Expansion only.
       9. Continue to follow the on-screen instructions.

More drives and expansion enclosures are designed to be dynamically added with virtually no downtime, which helps to quickly and seamlessly respond to ever-growing capacity demands.
